So quite often when people ask me about my training and I say I do weightlifting they mistake that for powerlifting so I thought I would just explain a few of the differences.
Weightlifting (Olympic) is two moves being the first one SNATCH and the second one the CLEAN & JERK. Powerlifting is three moves such as the Squat, deadlift & bench press. Yes they are both strength sports but also very different. The weightlifting moves are complex barbell movements requiring strength, speed, power, mobility. Technique is very important as it will make all the difference to your progress. After all you are taking a barbell from ground to overhead under explosive power so you want to do it right. Powerlifting moves mainly just require strength and move in a very simple plane, in fact a straight line and never above head. Weightlifting is definitely like a marathon as far as training & learning goes as there is so many elements to it, that you are constantly being challenged physically and mentally, that keeps me from getting bored with the training regardless of how frustrating the sport can be. Plus for me I feel weightlifting has the best of both worlds as I still get to squat, deadlift and even sometimes bench press plus so much more in order to get stronger for the olympic movements. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against powerlifting and in fact know many that do it that I admire & respect, but bottomline weightlifting is not powerlifting and they are very different. You also do not have to compete to do weightlifting movements either, you can incorporate it into your training as they have so many benefits both physically & mentally, especially if you are getting bored. This training will not only change you physically but mentally. Pictures below of the two weightlifting moves (snatch/clean & jerk) Are you training and still not getting closer to achieving your goals? Are you thinking you will never achieve your goals and therefore starting to settle? I say NEVER settle. Yes your goals will change as you achieve one after the other and as you grow stronger both mentally & physically but never settle thinking you can not achieve your goals so you give up. Client pictured above & in below video is still smashing goals and has progressed so much further in fat-loss, strength gains & more since this photo in August 2017 |
